Overview: Post-Licensure SPEC Examination

The Special Purposes Examination for Chiropractic (SPEC) is an examination for assessing clinical competency and licensing eligibility in cases involving disciplinary action, reciprocity, and other state board needs. It demonstrates proficiency in conditions generally encountered in chiropractic practice. The exam is designed to be administered to licensed or previously licensed chiropractors in special circumstances. This optional examination is available as requested/required by state boards. It is not for initial licensing purposes or routine license renewal and does not replace NBCE Parts I, II, III, and IV.

The SPEC test plan is based on practice requirements obtained from the NBCE's chiropractic job analysis survey. The material presented in SPEC requires that examinees demonstrate the appropriate clinical understanding and judgments required in general chiropractic practice.

The SPEC is delivered at computerized testing centers six times each year. The NBCE no longer offers a written version of the SPEC. The brochure and application for the SPEC examination are available on this Web site. SPEC candidates must submit the application, along with other required documents and fees to the NBCE.

After verification and processing of the application is complete, the NBCE will mail an authorization to test letter to the applicant. After receiving that letter, it is the applicant’s responsibility to contact the computerized testing center to make a testing appointment.
